ASHBURTON.
A heavy frost, was experienced at Ashburton~ on Wednesday night, V2\ degrees being registered at tho JJomain Weather Station. The annual meeting of the Baring Square Ladies' Guild was held on Wednesday, when the Rev. W. J. Elliott presided. Tho-report and balance sheet were adopted. The following officers wero elected: —President, Mrs w. J. Elliott; vice-president, Mrs (i. W. Andrews; secretary. Mrs J. W. Baker; treasurer. Mrs Choak; Buying Committee, the president, secretary,. an 1 Mrs W. H. Collins. Last evening the girls of the fifth and sixth standards at tho Ashburton Borough School presented Mrs E. WE lis, headmistress, who has' resigned., with handsomely-bound copies of Longfellow's and Tennysons poems, in token of their appreciation of the interest Mrs Willis had always taken in them, both physically and intellectually. A meeting, convened by Mr F. H. Morton, organist and choirmaster of St. Stephen's Church, was held on Wednesday evening, when it was decided to form a Choral Society,, to bo known as tho Ashburton Choral Society". ' Tho following were appointed a committee: —Messrs F. H. Morton, H. A. Humphreys, P. "Walker, H. A. Gates, F. Ferrinuin, C. B. Gass, R. Wishart, J. Lane, W. G. Roberts,- H. S. Gardiner, P. L. Orr, and W. K. Watson. Other officers were elected as follows: —President, his Worship the Mayor; vicopresidente, the clergy and choirmasters of the town, with' power to add. At a subsequent meeting of tho committee, Mr X Bush was appointed secretary, aud Mr Ferrimau treasurer. The appointing of a conductor was held over until next general meeting.' "
