APPEAL SUPPORTED BY DR. BLACKMORE.

(Per Favour of tho Editor of "Tho.

Press.")

Ladies and Gontlomen, —In to-night'a newspapers thero appears an appeal from his "Worship the Mayor on behalf of tho Open-air Homo for Children. "Will you allow mc space to support that appeal?

Through tho generosity of tho public, much has been done in Christchurch to provide facilities for detecting and treating consumption, but no active measures have yet been taken to try and prevent tho disease. Consumption will never bo eradicated if wo couliue our efforts to troatmont, but it certainly cau bo eradicated if wo aim primarily at prevention. 'Our preventive measures should aim specially at dealing with the cttild, because childhood is tho most susceptible period of life, and because it is in childhood that nearly all cases of tho disease, arc contracted. Day by day I boo delicate children who havo boon brought into intimate contact with consumptives, and I know that unless their resisting power to tlie diseaso can be raised to a high pitch, they will almost'inevitably develop tho disease later on in life. Fresh air, good food, and medical supervision are essential if these children are to have a chanco. In only too many cases the parents aro unable to givo what is needed, and unless outside- help is forthcoming, many'of these children will die prematurely, or liyo on, never knowing what true- health is. J feol suro that if tho true stato of affairs is understood, Mr appeal will not go unhcodod.—Yours, etc., G. J. BEACKMORE. k . Medical Director, Consumption Sanatorium. Cashmero Hills. ■3lay 20th. . j
