THE MAYOR'S APPEAL.

(Per Favour of the Editor of '"The

Press.")

Ladies and Gentlemen, —You may have soon by the daily newspapers that a strong Central Committee of Citizens has been r-et up in Chri&tchnrch to collect the necessary funds to provide open-

sir homes for tho children of parents affected with consumption, and also for children who arc threatened with the disease. By the generosity of the pu.blio, Hor.\es have been established for adults affected, and for advanced oases of consumption. The results of the treatment ami care there- are .such as to warrantme in appealing on behalf of tho children. It seems to mo that to provide Homes for the treatment of children is the quickest way of combating this dire disoa.se. The chances of cure are

so much greater. It may be said that the Hospital Board should take this matter up, butthe fact remains tha*t it has not dot:© so, and for lack of funds cannot do so for many yoars to come. Meanwhile, scores oi children are being affected, and are ire to sit by with folded lianas and do nothing? The citizens of Christchurch have said "'No!" very empbatir cally, and already promises of various sums have come in.

About £3000 is required from the public for the two Homes. This, wifh tho .Government subsidy of 24s in tho £, will produce £6000. Tho Hospital Board has agreed to take over tho management "and maintenance when the Homes aro equipped. 1 confidently appeal to the country, as well as to the city, to provide the sum mentioned, remembering .that he gives twice wl*i> gives quickly.

Dr. lJlackmore, the highest authority in New Zealand, says that such Homos are absolutely necessary, therefore, may 1 request all Mayors, chairmen of loral bodies, etc., to convene meetings «i» their districts for tho purpose of ..ettinjj up local committees to assist in collect' ing tho sum required. The members <<f the Central Committee and I will do al' in our power to fonder any assistaiuo required.

Thero aro many worthy objects of charity, but none moro worthy, an;l none that promises better returns for the money invested. Any contributions sent to mc or tho Town Clerk will bo gratefully acknowledged in tho. daily papers.—Yours faithfully, H. HOLLAND, Mayor of Christchurch.
