A CITIZENS' FUNCTION.
SATUHDAY NIGHT'S SOCIAL
GATHERING
On Saturday night a social organised by citizene of Christchurch will be given in tho King Edward' Barracks to tho Territorials who took part in the recent camp.
The Mayor recently wrote ta Colonel Smyth, Officer Commanding the District, inviting all the troops comprising the <3hristchurch Garrison to tho social gathering which was being organised by citizens, as a slight mark of their appreciation of the magnificent manner in which the troops behaved at the recent camp at Kowai under such trying conditions.
In a reply received by the Mayor yesterday,* Colonel Smyth expressed his pleasure at accepting the invitation on behalf' of the troops. The weather conditions at the Kowai camp, the writer added, wero exceedingly trying, but the troops came through to his entire satisfaction. Hβ felt they would much appreciate the invitation extended to them by the Mayor and citizens of Christchurch. The Mayor wishes it to bo understood that all Territorials are invited, and -he hopes that all. will be present. In connexion with the social arrangements have been made with the Gas Company to heat King Edward Barracks by means of some large coke fires and gas heaters., so that the building should be comfortably warmed. Hayward's Picture Entormises, Ltd., aro assisting the movement, ana have arranged to show military pictures on a 80-foot screen for about an hour. These will include Swedish Military Training and English Autumn Manoeuvres. Several of the leading vocalists of the city are giving their services. The bands of the Ist Mounted and Ist Infantry Regiments will be present and Elay selections. A very fine programme as been arranged, and a most enjoy--ablo evening should bo spent. A contract has been let to one of the leading caterers for the refreshments, and also for providing table and seating accommodation for all t-roo'TS attending. The Mayor (Mr H. Holland) will preside.
