HANMER SPRINGS.
A meeting was convened on Monday night by Mr E. Whitmore for.the purpose of getting the people of Hanmer Springs to unite by forming themselves into a body which would have the interests of tne place at heart. a few preliminaries had been .gone through, the meeting was closed and opened as a public ono, Mr James Ashton being appointed chairman. The business proposed to" be done by the new league, which it was decided to call the Hanmer Springs Advancement League, is to take up more seriously tho matter of street ■ lighting, revive the defunct Fire Brigade, and, if practicable, get a thorough." drainage scheme for the township (the last-named being very badly required); also to establish advertising bureaux in the various towns where tho -Government Tourist bureaux do not exist. These and several other matters were thoroughly gone into, and the following office-bearers were elected:—Patron. Messrs Geo. Forbes, M.P., Duncan Rutherford, and W. Hanmer-Atkinson;: president, Mr James Ashton; vice-president, Mr A. Porcival Smith; committee, Messrs E. R. Turton, E. H. Whitmore, J. Dodds, C. Lahmert, 0. Argelyn. O. Anderson, W. G. Morrison, Geo. Lucas, W. J. Thomas, E Collins, and D. Leishman; secretary, Mr J. C. Wallace.
