Under the Public Trust Omco Amendment Act passed last session, power is given to the Government to increase the numerical strength of the Public Trust Office Board by tho appointment of two,, additional members, who are not connected with the Public Service in any way. Tho provision in the Act was tho outcome of recommendations made by the Commission which investigated the affairs of the Public Trust Office and whose report was presented to Parliament last session. Tho new Act is now in force, and the various alterations which it provides in the working of the Department aro being completed. To-day tho Government made the two appointments to the Board for which the new Act provides. Tho gentlemen appointed aro Mr G. E. Tolhurst and Mr W. G. Foster. Mr Tolhurst has been for. many years connected with banking institutions in tho Dominion. Some little timo ago he retired, from tho position of Inspector for New Zealand for the Union Bank of Australia. Mr has had wide experience in business, and thor-. oughly understands the value of farming land aud stock. He was for some time chairman of the Assets Realisation Board of the Bank of New Zealand, which position he held until the Board's extinction in 1907. He at present holds the important position of chairman and managing director of the AVellington Meat Export Company. Interviewed by a "Dominion" reporter in connexion with the new appointments, the Minister in charge of the Department.(the Hon. A. L. Herdman) said he thought that it would.be generally conceded that the Government'had l>een fortunate in securing the services of such able .and,, highly experienced gentlemen as Mr Foster and Mr. Tolhurst to help in the conduct'of the business of a large State institution. The Public Trust Office hat! made remarkable progress, during recent years. The object which the Government had in passing the legislation of last year was to. provide additional machinery to improve tbe wo'rkifig of the Department, and at the same time to provide better safeguards to persons who had entrusted the manneement ot tb*»ir bi.nne , ssp<* to the Public Trust Offico. "With the strengthening of the Board .it is hoped." added the Minister, "that the public will have even greater confidence in the institution than has hitherto existed." I
