MAILS AND CABLES.
VIEWS OF MERCHANTS. (Received January ?9th. 8.30 p.m.) SYDNEY. January 29. Leading business men, discussing the Dominions Commission's report, are mostly of tho opinion that a mail service, fast enough to be worth while, , would cost more than Australia could , afford, but it is agreed on all hands • that' the present cable rates are far too high. Mr Weeche, general manager of th© j Poninsuiar and Oriental Company, said i bo considered that tho present 31 days' . mail service could be shortened to * a certain extent, but only if an extra subsidy wero paid for increased speed and the bunker capacity needed. This extra bunker space would curtail the space available for cargo. A reduction in the Australian terminal rates and tho wider employment if .wireless are amongst tbe suggestions < For reducing tho cable charges. "
