It is the intention of four principal tribes in tho Tokcrau land district — namely, tho Ngatiwhatua, Ngapuhi, Torarawa, and Teaupouri, to meet at tho end of March or early in April to discuss matters pertaining to the next genera] election. Tho coi> respondent of tho Auckland 'Star telegraphs: "It is said to be tho intention of some of tho tribes in that district to express dissatisfaction with their present member. Rangihiroa (l>r Buck), for the following reasons:—(l) That tho present representative hails from the Western Maori district; (2) that when the lato Hone Heke died m Wellington and his remains were brought to Kaikoho for interment thero as a compliment to the southern Maori chiefs and Sir James Carroll, and also upholding an ancient Maori custom, the. chiefs of the Tokerau land district promised that Br. Buck should be returned to Parliament for three years as Hone Heke's successor (the term of Dr. Buck's representation is now about to expire); (3) that iv is desirable that the Maori representative should be a member of the four tribes, bo he Reform, Labour, Independent, or Liberal, and such a candidate would receive the support of the four tribes: (4) that, as Dr. Buck is a member 01 j the Western District tribe and wishes | to retain his seat, his proper opponent ; would be. as member for that district, , T>r. Pomare, who represents the ISatives in the Executive Council. Ho should leave the Northern Maori candidates to fight their own battles among themselves m their own elections " These matters will be threshed out at the meeting of tribes comprising the Tokerau Land District, and a candidate will be selected whom the meet- , mg will be pledged to support.
