THE CHOKEBORE LODGE FIRE
LAKGE QUANTITY OF FEED DESTROYED. The disastrous fire which" occurred at 3tr E. Cutts's stables on Tuesday evening made a clean sweep of all the boxes, and at the present time the well-known Chokeboro Lodge establishment bears a very dilapidated appearance, while the veteran trainer has suffered an e:stra loss in tho large quaatity of fodder and straw that was destroyed. About 1000 bushels of oats were stored in the loft, and when the floor gave way this was precipitated into tho boxes below, and lay in the ruins of the stables, being completely spcilii by fire ami water. A largo amount of excel-j
lent hay was also lost in tho flames, and owing to' the. difficulty experienced of luto. in procuring lirst-clais fodaer the loss is very considerable. A large quanuty of tcraw was aiso destroyed. Little timo is being' lost in removing the debris, and all uay yesieruay mvu were busy slacking up the old iron, bagging: the large quantity of oats, and carting away the burnt and soaked bundics of hay. Everything is being done in an effort to make the place assume the tidy aspect that was always noticeable at Chokebore Lodge, and itwill not be long before a start is made to erect a now and up-to-date building. When the furniture was being removed from the house, one of the helpers, intent on saving anything and everything from the flames, wrenched a bath fro-n its fittings. The immediate consequence was . that tho place was flooded by the outrush from the broken pipes, and that the tanks were emptied just at the time when their contents were most needed. It was all el; 10 with the best intentions, of course, but it was a trifle uufortuuate, all ihe-same. The damage is roughly estimated at from £15GO to £1800, and it-is generally understood that there was no insurance on the building. From what can be gathered it appears that the insurance policy, tvhifh was for a considerable amount, expired about a fortnight ago, and as this was not renewed the loss is doubly severe. Mr E. Cutts has' experienced more than his fair share of ill-fortune durii.g the present racing season. Firstly, a number of hie most promising charges have met with bad luck, and in consequence tho success attained has been much below that enjoyod during the past few years. During trainiiig operations spme little time ago he was unfortunate enough to come into contact with a galloping horse that had got rid of its rider, and the injuries ho received kept him to his bed tor several days, and v© received'a bad shaking generally. The latest calamity is a very eevero blow, and well deserves the sympathy that is extended from all quarters. \ Ail the horses from the stable were on the tracks yesterday morning, and not one showed any signs of having been througii anything of a sensational nature. A number are quartered at the Racecourse Hotel, while Messrs Pratt, Bcoullar, and .Thomson have also placed several boxes at the disposal of Mr Cutts. Yesterday morning Mr Cutts was informed that eight more boxes at 011.3 gentleman's residence were available, and that they were to bo iised if needed. Fortunately, however, all the accommodation required was secured on f-'ie niuht oi tho lire, ami until other arrangements are made, Sir George Clifford's lengthy string will be quartered in various part-* of the district. The following is a complete list of the horses that wore in the stable at the time of the fire:—Antiimnus, •-■ Nightwafeh : Quarantine, Stevedore, Glenfimian, Veritas, Briar Patch, Brown Owl, Heather Brae. Winning "Way, Masterpiece, Firat Flight, Bold Stroke, Court Martial. Snapdragon. . Wharfinger, Merry Trick. Beircar Maid; Don Francisco ', Botanist, Commerce, Wise Bird, Antagonist, and Taskmaster.
