(special to "the thess.") OTAKI, January 27. Mr J. W. H. Scotland's visit to Otaki for the purpose of testing his newbiplane, brought to New Zealand some three weeks ago from the Old Country in order to give exhibition flights in the f chief centres of New Zealand, has created an unusual amount of interest. The machine is a, Caudron biplane, carrying a 45-horse-power Anzana engine* The petrol tank holds about 14 gallons of spirit, which lasts about four hours. The biplane, which has been flown to a height of some 1500 feet by Mr Scotland, is capable of doing over eixty miles an hour. When everything was ready for tho flight the machine rose and flew lik% a. bird almost the whole length of the ground. Mr Scotland was only out on trial, however, intending for a whilo to keep low, and consequently did not rise very high. On his return flight ho still kept low, but accomplished rapid flight. Just as he alighted, however, one set of wheels got in a rut, while a gust of wind got under tho opposite end of the plane, causing it to" tilt slightly, with the result that the left lower plane was damaged. The breakage was only a slight one, and Can easily be remedied.
