FIRES.
GIRLS' HOME DESTROYED. THREE LIVES LOST. (By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.) BRISBANE, January 27. The Salvation Army's Girls' Homo at Taringa, a suburb of Brisbane, was destroyed by fire this morning. Some of the inmates jumped from tho second storey. Two were burnt to death, one died of injuries received, and six others were injured. DUE TO INCENDIARISM. CULPRIT CONFESSES. (Received January 27th. 9.20 p.m.) BRISBANE, January 27. After the fire at the Salvation Army's Industrial Home for Women at Taringa, a married woman named Martingale, an jmnato of the Homo, surrendered to the police, and confessed that , eho started tho fire, also that she had thrico previously .attempted to burn the Home. There wore 32 inmates, and tho firo had a strong hold when discovered. Excepting tho Army Staff, who were cool, aud rendered assistance, the women became panic-stricken. A number sleeping in the upper storey were cut off by the flames, and jumped from balconies, sis receiving injuries. Three lives wore lost. A girl named Denyer was burned to death, and Mrs Halburn was shockingly burned. Mrs Manzel, who jumped from a balcony, succumbed to her injuries. Tho building, a wooden one, had been in the occupation of the Army for many years. Tlio fire was first noticed by the matron, who was sleeping out on a verandah. ,The fire started in a lavatory, and bnrned fiercely. The inmates comprised 35 girls and women, and five Army officers.
