A GLUT IN APPLES.

* — LOSS TO CALIFORNIAN SHIPPERS. (SPECIAL TO "THK, PRESS.") WELLINGTON, January 27. Owing to the effect of tho strike, there is a glut hi tho market of Californian apples. Large stocks which are ordinarily cleared before the New Year have accumulated, and are being quoted at four shillings to seven shillings a case, resulting in a heavy loss to the shippers. Ordinarily Californian apples sell at 13s to 15s. Since tho.. beginning of January New Zealand apples, cooking and preserving, have been on the market, fetching 4s to Gs a case. The Californian apple is bettor graded and of superior colour to the local fruit, but is imported only from October to December to tide the market over till the arrival of tho first of tho locaJlygrown fruit. Tho two apples do not thus conip into competition with each other. By the time August is reached each year the stocks of New Zealand apples are insufficient to meet requirements, and consequently Tasmanian apples are imported until the beginning of October. It is anticipated that the last of tho imported apples will be cleared in a few days, when the market is expected to get back to normal.
