• SITTINGS OF THE SENATE. (PRESS ASSOCIATION" TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN, January 27. The University Senate resumed its sessions to-day, tho Chancellor presiding. ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS COMMITTEE. The final report of the Entrance Examinations Committee contained tho following recommendations:— "That the request of the Secondary Schools' Conference, that the fee for re-examination, in one subject at the matriculation examination be reduced to one guinea, be granted. "That a list of all successful ■ candidates in the entrance examinations be printed in the report of the December Examinations Committee, and published in the minutes, and that copies bo sent to the principals of schools who hare presented candidates, as soon as possible after its adoption. "That marks gained by candidates in tho matriculation examination be reduced to a common standard and published with tho numbers, instead of the names of those candidates who have failed to report." The recommendations were adopted. SCIENCE COMMITTEE. The Scienco Committee recommended that tho regulations relating to the Engineering Travelling Scholarship be amended to read in effect: —"That the holder of the scholarship shall, within six months of the award, proceed to some other country to be approved by the Chancellor, and there profitably employ his time during the whole term of his scholarship in acquiring a knowledge of his profession, and shall at the end of every three months furnish to the Chancellor, through tho professor in charge of the School of Engineering, Canterbury College, a full and satisfactory report detailing his employment during that period.' , Tho recommendation was agreed to. AUTHORS AXT> PERIODS COMMITTEE. Tho Authors and Periods, Economics, and Commerce Committee recommended :— ''(a) That the professors of English be thanked l'or*-calling the attention of the Senate to the neglect of instructions bythe examiner in English, and informed that the attention of tho University agent in England will be called to the matter. "And (b) that the Registrar bo instructed to draw the attention of the University agent to the fact that in the English examination papers' for 1913 practically no attention was paid by tho examiner to the suggestions that a choice of questions should be allowed, and that the quantity of vowels in the Anglo-Saxon passages should bo carefully marked." The recommendation was agreed to. The Authors and Periods, Economics and Commerce Committee recommended that the Senato adopt suggestions made by the principals of training Colleges respecting the Habens prize, viz.:— "(a) That tho prize be*an annual one of not more than £5. '"(b) That at least two years' notice of the subject of tho essay be given." The committee also recommended that examiners for the Habens prize be. for 1914, Mr T. S. Foster, M.A., Professor C. F. Salmond, M.A., and Mr G. Hogben, M.A..; for 191.5, Mr J. S. Tennant, M.A., B.Sc., Professor T. A. Hunter, M.A., M.Sc. and Mr G. Hogben, M.A. The Authors and Periods Committee recommended that tho first part of Clause 1 of tho Statute dealing with University terms read : — "(1) Any matriculated student of the University, whose name is on the books of an affiliated College, and who has attended the lectures and passed its annual examination, shall be deemed to have kept the terms of the year, provided that, before presenting himself for a University examination for which tho keeping of terms is required, he must have passed the College examination in the subjects he offers at a stage corresponding to that of such Univervsitv examination." ; This was agreed to. NOTIFYING ALTERATIONS. It ;was decided that notification .of alterations made in degree courses by. tho Senate be sent out .to the staffs of Colleges not later than the end of February.
