DEFENCE OF THE PACIFIC.

SYDNEY, December 8. The Minister of Defence considers that his department is extravagantly administered, and foreshadows economies. Senator Millen says he has noticed with considerable gratification that tho New Zealand Minister of Defence declares himself dissatisfied with the departure from tho 1909 agreement. To those who take a serious view of the Pacific question, it must be pleasing that New Zealand is apparently anxious that its effort in the direction of naval defence should take place a little nearer its own shores.
