ELLESMERE.
The annual meeting of the Ellesmere County Council was held at Leeston on Monday. Present —Crs.. J. Storey (chairman), J. Cunningham, T. A. Stephens, F. J. Lemon, J. Lochhead, and J. C. Free. Cr. Storey was reelected chairman. A motion of sympathy was passed with Cr. Xochhead on the death of his mother. The monthly meeting was then held. It was decided to.mako formal application to the Minister of Internal AfFairs for the Council to be declared a leasing authority under tho Public Bodies Leasing Powers Act. The Treasury wrote, stating that the balance of subsidy for the year ending March,, 31st, 1913, amounting to £82 16s 9d, was being held to cover the annual payment towards the Rakaia bridge upkeep for 1913-14. It was decided to record a protest against the amount being held by tho. Treasury. Tho water-race caretaker's report was read, and it was decided to give fourteen days' notice to defaulters. The matter of renewing or repairing the culverts at Tauinutu and'pooper's lagoons was discussed, and it was",agreed to put two schemes before the *j ratepayers, and ask them what finahcipl assistance they would give. Tho clerk 'reported having made investigations with regard to the reserve leading to the Show-ground, which, it was proposed, should be dedicated as a public" road, and had found that the reserve stood in tho name of the Superintendent of Canterbury as a shingle reserve. It was decided to interview the Hon. R. H. Rhodes with regard to tho title of the land in question. The following tenders were accepted :—Shingling Stewart's road, Dawson Bros., at Is 8d per yard; shingling Coe's ford to Lake road, G. Hamilton, at 2s per yard.
