SHORT ENTRIES.
SHARP RISE IN PRICES.
(by ocb commercial editor.) There wero small entries of stock, in consequence of so many £ farmers having come into town to assist in the reopening of the port of Lyttelton. There was consequently sharp rises in prices of f3t cattle, sheep and lambs. Store sheep showed no change, neither " did pigs. There was a dull sale for store cattle. There was. a moderate attendance at the sale. STORE SHEEP. Although the yarding of store sheep was a small one, it was nevertheless considerably in- excess of that of the previous week. The entries comprised two and four-tooth shorn wethers, a few woolly hoggets, aud two or three lines of ewes (shorn and unshorn), mostly of a medium class. Without anything sensational in the way of prices paid, late rates were fully maintained in every particular, and the whole yarding changed hands at auction. Quotations are: —■ Four-tooth ehorn wethers, fair quality, 15*. Four-tooth shorn wethersj very forward, 16s sd. Shorn two-tooth wethers, 14s to 14s 2d. Wether hoggets, medium, 15s 7d. Four, sis and eight-tooth shorn ewes in low condition, with lambs, 8s 8d (all counted). Sound-mouth halfbred ewes, unshorn, with lambs, 12s 2d to 13s (all counted). Woolly merino ewes, with lambs, 9s 6d (all counted). j Shorn four and sis-tooth ewes, 16s ldr The sales included the undermentioned lines:—Wethers: 156 shorn at 14s, 54 shorn two-tooths at 14s 2d, 416 fourtooth 6horn halfbred wethers at 15s Id, 416 four-tooth shorn halfbred wethers at 16s sd. Hoggets: 27 woolly wethers at 15s 7a. Ewes and lambs (all counted): 279 (merinos) at 9s 6d, 52 (throoquarterbred) at 12s 2d, 55 three-quarter-bred at 13s. FAT LAMBS. There were only 219.-fat lambs penned as against b'3s last week, and the quality was again prime. They sold under good competition from the butchere at advanced pnees, thorabge being:— Best lambs, 18s to 225. Lighter, 16s 3d to 17s 9d. The principal sales were:—For M. FAT SHEEP. .There was also a small yarding of fat sheep, only six races being occupied as against ten last week. All the sheep were shorn, and the quality was good to prime. There was a sharp rise in prices, equal to 2s to 3s per head, the advance being more, noticeable in ewes than in wethers. The range of prices was:— Woolly.wethers, 24s to 27s 9d. Prime shorn'wethers, 22s 6d to 265. Lighter, 20s' Id to 2Se. Woolly ewes, 23s 6d. • Primo shorn ewes, 21s to 255. The entries in tho fat cattle pens showed a very distinct falling off, the yarding totalling 173 against 2U7 tho previous week, 378 on, November sth, and 243 on October 29th. In point of quality little fault could be found with -the entry, the majority of the animals offered" be:ng first-class. As a consequence of tho short market tho demand was keen, and, compared with the prices ruling a week earlier, values showed an advance equal to Is Cd to 2s per 1001b. Quotations: — Beef, 31s 6d to 33s per 1001b, according to quality. Steers, £3 7s 6d to £11 10s; extra to £14 los. Heifers. £6 17s 6d to £9; extra to £12 7s 6d. . . Cows, £€ to £8: extra to £12 17s 6d.
