ATTEMPT TO BURN A RAILWAY BRIDGE.
ON MANAWATU LINE
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAMS.) PALMERSTON N., November 24.
Shortly before 3 o'clock on Sunday morning what appears to be a deliberate attempt to burn the railway bridge over the Manawatu river at Longburn was discovered. The fire was observed by the driver of the Auckland express a little after 3.30 V' Flames were noticed coming up between the sleepers at the northern end of the bridge, and the train was immediately pulled up. The fire had not obtained a good hold, and was immediately extinguished. The damage was slight. There is enough evidence to show that the fire was not the res*ilt of an accident.
The Longburn bridge is a very long bridge over the Manawatu river near Longburn, where the Manawatu river spreads over a wide expanse of shingle. If it were destroyed it would cut out communication between Wellington and Auckland on the main line. Trains would then have to come over the difficult and tedious Rimutaka and through the Manawatu Gorge to Palmerston.
