SENIOR CUP MATCHES.

UNITED v. MIDLAND

These teams met at Hag-ley Park on Saturday, when T. D. Harman, the United captain, won tlie toss, and as the wickst looked in good order for batting on, he sent his opponents into the field. It was soon apparent, however, that tlie pitch liad not fully recovered from the rain which fell on Thursday night, and the bowlers were able to get a good deal of work on tlie the ball. Wigley and Ollivier (the first pair of batsmen) made 15 before tlie former was bowled by Pearce. Sims, Weston, and Harman were disposed of m rapid succession, four wickets being down for 46 runs. At 53 Blunden was bowled by D. Reese, and tlien Boddington and Ollivier made a short standi taking the score to 79 before Pearce bowled tlie latter for a well-hit 45, which included a 6, two s's, and three 4's. R. Fisher left six runs later, and then E. H. Frankif"lt joined Boddington, and the longest stand of the innings was made, the total being taken to 137 before they were separated. F. M. B. Fisher quickly knocked up 19 not out, and the innings eventually closed for 167. Frankish displayed jjood cricket in putting together liis 40, but Boddington had a good deal of luck in compiling Ids 33, as just after he went in a ball from Pearce hit liis wicket witliout dislodging the bails, and he was twice missed beliind the wicket, besides once at mid-off. Pearce bowled capitally throughout the innings, and he beat most of his opponents with off breaks. Tlie fielding was below the average. The Midland had a little more than an hours batting, and they fared so badly against Fisher's bowling that at the call of time they liad lost six wickets for 4o runs, the bowler named taking five for 20. These teams met at Lancaster Park on Saturday. The Lancastrians had first' us*

of the wicket, but made a poor start, the fourth . wicket falling with the total at 40. Hammond then joined C- Ridley, who had gone in first, and a splendid stand was made. The total was taken* to 153 before a separation was effected, Hammond then being caught after an attractive innings- of 42. Of the others, Wilding knocked up 19' quickly, and R. Ridley followed suit with 34, 32 of which were made by bouudarv strokes. When C. Ridley's score was at 95"he bad the bad luck to play a ball on to his pad, from wTiencc it rolled on to his wicket. His runs had been made by sound and correct batting, his strokes all round being first-class. Willsteed was not out with 20, and he showed excellent defence. The Sydenham bowling, with the exception of McMurray's, 'was very simple, and their fielding was slack. When the suburban team went to bat they gave a feeble exhibition, the score standini: at 73 for eight wickets when time was called. Ashby was top with a carefully plaved.lß.
