NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL.

TOUR OF THE ENGLISH TEAM.

DISPOSAL OF THE PROFITS

A meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council was held last night. PresentMr A. E. G. Rhodes (vice-president), Messrs G. A. U. Tapper (Southland), Q.. de Vries (Wairarapa), J. 0. Jameson (South Canterbury), C. R. Clark (Wanganui), K. J. Bunby (Auckland),. J. U. Collins (Wellington), R. D. Harman (lion, treasurer), F. C. Raphael (hon. secretary, Canterbury), R. Vincent (Manawatu), C. Tieweek (Wellington), J. H. W. Wood (Nelson), W. H. C. Wigley (South Otago), H. Boddington (Otago), W. D. Meares (Hawke's Bay), W. G. Garrard (Hamilton), A. Sims (West Coast), Hon. E. C. J. Stevens (Marlborough).

The Wellington Association wrote, suggesting that, owing to the necessity of New Zealand being represented by its best possible team in the New Zealand match against Lord Hawke's team, the Council should pay players actual out of pocket expenses, in addition to travelling expenses.

Mr W. H. E. Wanklyn wrote, apologising for absence, and objecting to the ie.seinding of the resolution—"That only actual travelling expenses will be paid to players taking part in the New Zealand matches'*' —as suggested by the Wellington Association, on the ground that insufficient notice had been given.

Mr Raphael moved that the resolution be rescinded.

Mr Collins seconded the motion, which was agreed to.

Mr Harman moved that the Committee of the Council be authorised to reimburse any of the players any amount of pay they may actually lose in connection with playing in the South Island and New Zealand matches.

Mr Treweek seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Mr Jameson moved (Mr Meares not having arrived at the time) —"That the resolution passed on December 11th, dealing with the profits of the tour, be lescinded." This resolution provided for the profits, if any, being divided amongst the various Associations. *Mr Vincent seconded the motion. Mr Bunby suggested that the profits should be devoted in the first instance to recouping any of the Associations which had lost by the mate-lues with the English team. Hon. Mr Stevens" said it had never been intended that the Council should receive any of the pro£t» from the tour, and retain them as a fund. No provision had been made, however, for recouping those Associations who on account of bad weather had lost by the matches. It appeared to him that if the profits were devoted as originally proposed", several Associations would be losers —Associations which had done as much as any others to promote the interests of the tour. This" was a very inequitable arrangement, but if the profits became the property of the Council' they would have at their disposal the means of restoring to the Associations which had made' losses the amount of their shortage. That would be a fair position to take.

The motion rescinding thß resolution was agreed to, the Chairman only recording his vote against it.

Mr Meares then moved—"That the profits, if any, of the South Island, New Zealand, and Australian matches be the property of the Council."

The Chairman, pointed out that by rescinding the resolution the profits become the property of the Council and that it would be better to leave fclte question of the disposal of the profits till after the Australian tour, when they would know how much they had in hand, and Mr Meares could then give notice of motion as to the allocation of the money. Mr Meares withdrew his motion.

Mr Raphael moved—"That in the case of the South Island and New Zealand teams, the' captains be appointed by the selectors of the teams."

Mr Treweek seconded the motion

Mr Clark, as an amendment, moved— " That the captains be selected by ballot by the teams."

Mr Jameson seconded this, and it was agreed tp.

It was decided, on the motion of Mr Jameson, that the sub-committee be recommended not to engage brass bands for the South Island or New Zealand matches.' '
