LINWOOD.
The Linwood Borough Council met last night. Present—The Yjior and Crs. Otley, Brunt, Jamieson, beed. Robertson, Denton, Schumacher, and Dixon. The Finance Committee reported that since the last report £1055 15s 5d had been collected on general account, and £2046 7s 5d on loan account, including £2000 worth of loan debentures sold. Total collected, £3102 2s 10d. The general account was in debit to the amount of £393 17s lOd, and with the deposits at call £170) made a total debit of £563 17s lid. The public works loan account showed a credit of £1510 7s 4d, and the Recreation Ground account of £24 7s. The report recommended payments on general account of £383 6s lid, and on public works loan account of £428 17s 3d. The report was adopted, and the accounts passed for payment. It was resolved to comply with a request for financial assist-, ance received from the Technical Classes Association. A circular letter from Mrs Louisa J. Seddon, president and treasurer pro tern of the New Zealand Soldiers' Guild, asking for a subscription, was received. A letter from the Department of Justice empowering local bodies to have control of licensing districts, was also received. Mr J. W- Leigh wrote claiming £53 7s for alleged damage to his section in Cashel street through the formation of the concrete channelling. Mrs C. M. Evans wrote a similar letter, hut claiming a much smaller amount. The letters were received. CrJamieson moved—"That the damage complained of by Mr Leigh be paid according to assessment, and that Mrs Evans be refunded the cost of the eartfi which, at the order of the Council, she had placed in front of her section. Cr. Otley pointed out that many trees could be bought for £30, and he tttd not think that any damage had been caused by the channel. " After some discussion, Cr. Janrjeson moved—"That a committee be set up. consisting of the Mayor, Crs. Brunt, Robertson, and Seed, with power to call expert evidenoe." The motion was carried. tion from A. Henderson and others with regard to the state of Rolkston street was referred to the Works Committee. The clerk was instructed to reply to a letter from T. C. Norris, secretary of the CJL Board, asking whether the contributions were to be based upon capital or upon unimproved value. The question of widening the Stanmore road by Mr Stringer's section was referred to the Works Committee with power to act.
