LINWOOD BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Linwood Borough Council was held laet night, when the Mayor and Crs. Dixon, Denton, Brunt, Jamieson, Seed, Brown, Young, Schumacher, OUey, and Robertson were presont. Cr. Otley, chairman of the Works Committee, said they' had been put to great inconvenience lately through their gangers leaving them. They had, therefore, decided to invite tenders, which, being read, showedilie tender of Moor Bro?., at £5 per chain for kerbing and channelling, £3 for sumps, and 6in pipe £6 12s per chain, being the lowest. The contract was for 250 chains or more. He moved the adoption of Moor Bros. , tender. Cr. Jameson opposed! tendering for this matter, as 'Linwood was about to join the city, and ho thought that as a dying body they were not justified in incurring the expenditure. Cγ- Seed contended that the_ borough would have hud its work done quicker and better by contract- There was no surer way of making a- man p, Icafer thai, by putting him on to a public job at day wages. Hd supported tie acceptance of the tender. Cγ. Biowii also supported the acceptance of the tender- He did not blame- tlie workmen for leaving a dying job, but the Council stood" pledged to carry out this work within n, year. In his opinion they were justified in finishing their own work rather than leave it to ba completed by another body. Cr. Brunt would have preferred day labour, but thought it only right that the borough should spend its oivh money. He would support the motion. Cr. Otley having replied, the resolution was put, and Messrs Moor Bros.' tender wp.fi unanimously accepted. Matters in connection with Greater Christchurch were then considered, a report of which is published elsewhere.
