A MAN FOUND DROWNED.

At about half-past five yesterday afterneon a man who was fishing in the Heathcote, at a spot five or six chains east of Colombo street, was startled to see the dead body of a man lying) in the stream, which was three or four feet deep at the place. He immediately hastened to Mr J. L. Scott's house in Colombo street flouth, xad ifrom there informed the Sydenham police, by telephone, of hie discovery. Constable Bradley proceeded at once to the place-, and found the man lying with his right ieg protruding above the "water, and a piece of wire farmed round the ankle, and attached to a tree on th* bank. While the body was being lifted out of the stream, a cord, which was about his neck, snapped, and a bagful of ston«3 thus suspended fell to the ground. The man was rather below the ordinary height, apparently between 60 and 60 years old, and mod-erately well dressed. As far as could be ascertained last eventhe deceased was not known at all in Sydenham. The only clue to his identity "was a Tfeceipt, on his person, from the Taieri Dairy Company, which bore the signature of Dajvid Aubrey. The body was taken to the Morgue, where an inqueet will be held. On the bank, dose to where the body was discovered, there was found 1 , tiedl up in a towel, a complete suit of clothes and a hat. This bundle was seen at six o'clock in the morning, but apparently no notfoe -was taken of it. When Mr Fabin went fishing at this particular spot late yesteiriay afternoon, a boy told him that there was a bundle of clothes on the bank. As the river in that locality is need as a bathing place, Mr Fabin thought (bob some person, who .had been bathing, bad met with en accident while in the river. He began, to look round, and after searching about for a time be noticed the wire tied to the tree. The inquest will probably not take place till to-morrow, as the police require time to make inquiriea at Hampdeo.
