Mr Honry Brett, of the Auckland "Star" and Mrs Brett, who have been on a visit to th* Wonganui river district, arrived in Wellington on Monday night en route for the South Island. Mr and Mrs Brett will make a tour of the Southern Lakes <iistrict, and will then return to Christchuroh, where Mr Brett is to attend a meeting of the Press Association. The Hon. W. C. Walker, (Minister for Education, arrived from Wellington by yesterday's steamer. Mr Warner, captain of Lord Hawke's cricket team, was a visitor to Mr E. Wilder, Ngapara, Fernside, yesterday. At a pleasant little smoke concert held last evening, Captain Macartney being in the chair, bergoant-Major Berland who is leaving the North Canterbury Mounted Rifle**, was presented by his comrades with a purse of sovereigns. Messrs G. Magnus (Wellington), R. A. Moore, M. Eiohelbaum (Wellington), C. Daniels (Melbourne), and C. A. C. Cunningham arrived in town yesterday morning. 'Mx Thomas Riddle, a licentiate of the Chriistchurch Presbytery, has offered to undertake mission work in the New Hebrides, and his offer has been accepted. It is (probable that his ordination will take place in this city. The passengers for Hanmer yesterday were Mrs X W. Trent, Miss Rutherford, Miss I. Rutherford, Rev. J. M. and Mrs Adcock, Jirs and Miss Watson (Roslyn, Dunedin), and Mr and Mrs P. J. Carman. * At the meeting of the Cbristch/urch Presbytery yesterday, a motioni, moved by Dr. Erwin, was agreed to, expressing the Presbytery's sympathy with Mr and Mrs John Boag in their recent sad bereavement, caused 'by the sudden and! tragic death of their youngest son. Among the latest arrivals at Hanmer were: —At Amuri Grange—Mr Griffiths, Mr Whittnker, Mice Fleming, Mr and Mrs Brookes, Mr Blair, Mise Watson, Misees Yates (2), Mr Thompson (Rangiora). At The Spa—Mrs Smith, Mr and Mrs Wesney (Invercargill), Mrs Goldsmith (Waimate). At Windsor "House—Mr and/ Mrs Lonagan, Miss Lonagan (Christchurch), Mr Low. At Langley Villa—Mr Thomas, Mr and Mrs Barrett (Timaru), Mr and Mrs H. Ciarkson (Christchurch). Miss R. Ford (Addington) and Miss Peter (Mount Somers) returned from Hanmer yesterday. Mr and Mrs A. Sinclair, who have been on a visit to England, returned to their homa in Timaru by the express yesterday morning. Hon. J. M. Twomey, M.L.C., was a passenger from the South by the express last night. . JVUr C. J. Roakes and Mr H. Fielder left for the North by last night's- eteomer. Mr and Mrs J. O. R-oss and Mr C. W. Hurethouso loft for the West Coast yesterday. Mr M. Murphy, F.L.S., intends attending the Masterton Show next week. Mr Fairbum, Mr McMillan, •Mγ A. Hawdon, Mr B. Mocdonald, Mr J. M. Lawson, Mr P. H. Power, and Mr 'McGill arrived in town yesterday.
