WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.

, ANNUAL MEETING.

At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Women's Institute, the Secretary reported that, during the reoe«i a communication bad been received from the Progressive Liberal Association, inviting the institute to assiet in promoting a deputation to wait upon the Premier with tlie object of urging upon him the necessity for a reform in the land laws, in the direction of the stoppage of isalee of Crown land-?, and the periodical re-valuation of all Crown leases. As the promotion of thsee reforms is one of the planks of the platform of the institute, the President and Secretary considered , that they were justified in replyin? in the affirmative, and in stating that they would be delegates. Their action ynta approved. The Acting-President read an address epitomising the work of the during the past year, calling attention to the success of efforts in some, direction, and emphaeieing the need for continued action. A hearty vote of- thanks was accorded her, and bones were expressed that the address would be published. A discussion took place as to the best means to be employed in order to induce a better attendance of membora at the meetings. The Treasurer, who, to the regret of the institute, is retiring from office, reported thai there was a- credit balance. It was resolved —"That this institute places on record its appreciation of the devoted dfmts of Mrs Williams, and trusts that she will bo speedily restored to health."

The following officers were elected: — President, Mrs S. Page; secretaries. Mrs Henderson and Miss A- E. Hookham; •vice-oreaideavte, Mesdames Smith", Will'ams, Black and Hookham (2): committee, Mesdames Isherwood, Atkinson. Clarkson, Crocfcr. GTcaves, Ensom. Ell, Fletcher, Stokos. Sanders, Wells, Speck, Sheppard, and'Lissaman, Misses Saville, Stamper, Fletcher and Atkinson. . The election of a Treasurer was postponed. Mrs Greaves was elected to represent the institute for the present year on the committee of the Anti-Gamblinsr League, in place of Mrs Clarkson, resigned.
