PERSONAL ITEMS.
The Hon. F. H. Fraser and the Hon. R. J. H- Reeves arrived in Christohurch by yesterday's steamer from Wellington. Canon Averill returned from the North on Saturday morning, after a holiday which ho has been speeding at Wellington nnd Nelson. Dr. and Mra Kenny (Perth), Dr. Lister (Melbourne), Mr A. S. Patterson (Wellington), Mr C Phillips (Auckland), Mr D. Mackay (Melbourne), Mr G. Laing Meaeon (Timaru), Mrs Barr (Dunedin), Mr W. A. Stewart (Melbourne), Mr A. R. Porteous and Mrs Porteus (Greymouth), Mr S. Woodburn, Mr J. L. Woodburn (Melbourne), and Mr and Mrs Junor Smith (Melbourne) arrived in town on Saturday. Mr W. Hudson, Misses Hudson, Mr and Mrs Robinson, Mr.W. E. Fehon, and Mr H. J. Geritson went North by Saturday night's steamer. Mr it- G. Spiers, Captain Meiklebam, and Detective Fitzgerald were passengers from the South by the express on Saturday. Arrivals in Chratchurch yesterdiiy included Mx Dixon (Wellington), Mr Hislop (Dunedin), Mr Norman Cook (Wellington), Mr Bellair (Wagga Wagga, N.S.W.), Mr Lewis (Wagga Wagga, N.S.W.), Mr Ensor (North Canterbury), Mr F. W. Fife, and Mr G. E. Whooton. Mr T. F. Thompson, of Sydney, and Mr C. H. H. Clark, of Nelson, are recent callers at the Tourist Bureau. The Government has decided to re-ap-point Sir James Prendergast and'Mr F. De C. Malet, the retiring members of the Bank of New Zealand directorate. Mr and Mrs Barratt, Mr and Mrs Jas. Weir Mr and Mrs J. Wesney, Mrs Smith, Mrs Beatrice Harband (New Brighton), and Mr and Mrs Lester Wilson were passengers to Hanmer by the train on Saturday morning. Mr Morris Fox, the Government Actuary, has been appointed to represent New Zealand at the Fourth International Congress of Actuaries, which is to be held at New York in August and September next. Mr Fox leaves for London via Naples in April, after the distribution of profits to the polioy-holdeie in the Government Insurance Department has been competed, and will tour the Continent, returning to the colony towards the end of November, The Rev. J. A. Julius, who has made himself popular during his curacy of St. Michael's Church, will take up his new work as vicar of Waikari from the 22nd instant His place at St. Michael's will be taken by the Rev. Otho Fitzgerald, formerly vicar of St. Thomas's Church, Newtown, who returned recently, with his health broken, from working under the Universities' Mission in Central Africa. Since then Mr Fitzgerald has been assisting at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral, Wellington. He is expected to arrive in Cliristchuroh on the 18th instant.
