HEROISM OF NURSES AND ATTENDANTS.
TEPvRIBLE SCENES WITH SUICIDAL PATrRXTS. (Received January 28th, 11.31 p.m.) LONDON. Janunry 28. Threo hundred and thirty pauper cripples, of whom a hundred wen quite h-?d----riddT.,, t occupied a wooden annexe v.- ColHey Hatch Asylum, containing five wards. It was connected with the main building by a corridor, which tue firemen demolished, thus rnnrlcing the conflagration to t;ie annexe. A nurre first discovered the fire in a storeroom. Iht; flamen sprt.ad with the greatest rapidity, despite the efforts of tue asylum firemen, who were soon aided l>y thirty-iive London engines and 2CO firemen. All the nurses and attendants of the asylum made gallant efforts, and succeeded: in rescuing 280 inmates, Dr. Seward, the medical superintendent, personally saving scoreK. The worst occurred in ward 5, where the suicidal patients were housed. Thirty-five out of seventy perished, while- sixteen perished in ward 4. Some patients were quite calm, others were gleeful, and jomo were frenzied and fought their rescuers, hiding under tJie beds. One bit a nurse's finger off. No nurses were killed, though several were injured.
