HEROIC ATTEMPTS AT RESCUE.

The fire in the Colney Hatch Asylum started at 5-30 o'clock in the morning in an .annexe containing two hundred women who were still in bed. There was a high wind blowing, and the annexe was quickly a mass of flames. The pipe leading to an artfsian well was undergoing repairs, and the water supply was scarce. Many fire brigades- were in attendance. The, Asylum officials and attendants made heroi<; efforts to *ay.:( the patient a, but experienced difficulty in getting the afrlie.ts«i people to understand their peril. Many resisted tho. attempts to rescue them, and numbers were, overpowered in the corridors. Two nurses perished. The latest report givf* the number of deaths ;:s fifty.
