M. COOMBES IN DEFENCE.
A HOSTILE MOTION PASSED
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received January 28th, 8.27 a.m.) PARIS, January 27. In the Chamber of Deputies, M. Combes, the Premier, refused to entertain M. Alls rd's proposal to abolish the Concordat, contending that the State needed religion. He eaid the masses were not satisfied with simply moral ideas. M. Berthelot's motion for the submission of the question of the separation of the Church and State to c referendum was referred to ft committee, despite M. Combes's declaration that such a separation would create eerious difficulties in the Republic. ROME, January 27. The French Premier's claim, that the exclusive right of the selection of bishops should be recognised as remaining vested in the Government, is strenuously resisted by the Vatican. The Pope declares that ho would prefer that every see was vacant, and the Concordat abolished, rather than yield.
