THE CROPS IN SOUTH CANTERBURY.
Very erratic weather still prevails over South Canterbury, and prospects for a good harvest are not now bo bright as they were. Many of the crops were so matted and tangkd by the rain and wind of Sunday last that it will be very difficut to tut them. In some cases, on very heavy land.s, whole fields have gone down as if the sea had broken in and swept over them. It yras raining intermittently in Timaru yesterday, and at Makikihi a strong hailshower fell, which broke the windows of buildiinge and did further damage to the growing com.
A terrific iiailetorm was experienced in the Waimate district in the morning, travelling over the Waihao Downs through the gorge. Windows were broken by the enormous stones, and for a time the streets were quite white. There is lik*ly to ye great damage to tsie crops.
HEAVY RAIN AT OAMARU. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.)
OAMARU, January 27. The heavy rain last night culminated in thunder and a hailstorm to-day, happily of brief duration, otherwise serious injury would have resulted to the crops. As it >s many heavy fields have been badly laid.
