THE TRAMWAYS BOARD.

TO THE KDITOIt OF THE FKESS. Sir, —As several acquaintances asked me if I had befcxre nomination applied for a position as scrutineer, I shad bo glad if you will permit me to state that I never thought of doing so. I had previously decLmad to stand before Mr C. Casimir informed me that he had been nominated. Without doubting that his few montlis' residence in Übristchurch entitled him to place his services at the disposal of the citizens, I thought that, after about eighteen years of writiaig in tbe interest of progression, it was time I began to come personally forward. In a spirit of humour ratlier than sarcasm I accepted Mr Gasimir's nomination without hoping for the support of even the party which gave iliim countenance —the Socialist's. I spent 2d, and only solicited one Vote, that of a lady whose name I knew was not on the roll; our friendly relations were rather increased than diminished by the incident. When I seriously desire to form one of a pubic body I shall be prepared to do a little canvassing, and not fight with kidgloves, as a friend said in kindly criticism. Concerning the result of. yesterday's voting for the four seats, aa one who has done as much for tooth movements aa any of the candidates, I may perhaps be allowed to express honest satisfaction. I hope that tbe Board ■will build up a model traanway system, and am enviab'e reputation.—Yours, etc., J. H. NEWLYN. Christchurcht, January 23rd, 1903-
