CANTERBURY v LORD HAWKE'S TEAM.
In view of the coming match against Lord Hawke's team, the Canterbury players have been practising daily at Lonoa&wr Park. As Callaway, D. H.us*i", Pearce, and Cfarrard will probably be available, the local team should be considerably stronger than th-j elevens which were victorious ag-jinsre Otago and Wellington. Toe batting of the Canterbury players has been u£d«T a cloud tliis •season, but at. last there are signs of improvement. Tb* practices would be considerably improved if tome of the local tiundlers would help at the bowling crease, as the bowlers of the team skw overworked.-
The following details of the form at practice aia supplied by an observer: — Oa.liivv.jy is in gixxl form with bat and ball. D. Reese'is batting iwid bowiing in better form tluui ever. Hβ bowls iuster than of yore, and bis timing ar.d cutting h:w improved. Orchard is in wk hitting vein. At times lib plays a steady game, which ia certainly not suitid nor suitable for a player of his priiwtss. Fraiikish should be very fit for the match. He is varying his pace and length more -than usual, but bis batting
is practising hard, but like some of the others his batting is below par. Strange still keeps in good form. His defence ia improving, and he picks the balls to hit better for his favourite off stroke. Wigley, like his club mates, is not at his best. The system he has adopted of stopping the ball with his leg, seems to huxe affected his whole play- (Xlivier is not practising much. Pearee. despite his absence from the cricket field and irregularity at practice, is batting in really good form, but his bowling is without its tisual sting. Garrard is brtUing very steadily, and is very hard to dislodge. *T. W. Reeee is also in good form. Ho has developed some forcing strokes to good purpose, but an element of rashness needs eradicating. H- C. Ridley, though in good form, is not y«t at his best-, and must practise more. Boxshail is in good hitting form, but sJxrald choose the right ball to play. HoweJH is not at present bowling as he did against WeTCington and Otago. Lawrence, owing to business, is not practising with regularity, but he is batting in an attractive manner.
