ASHBURTON.
The Asliburton Borough Council met on Monday evening. Preeeutr-rThe Mayor (in the ohair), Crs. Aksorn, Andrews, Davia, Timmins, Davison, Clark, and Willis. The Mayor reported that the debit , balance at the* bank was £1870 8s 9d, and the sum of £587 lla 10d had been received from all sources since last meeting. " Mr J- Lane wrote in reference to the Somerset hoarding. Mr' Lane attended hi person',,-and baoded in a letter from ilr Maddison, architect, asking for an extension of time. Mr Lane explained that it would cost him £1500 to tiirn tie building into shops. Th* Mayor infowned Mr Lame that t<he matter would be dealt with, and he would receive notice lof tlus Council's decision. The Works Committee' recommended the Council K> again urge tlw Government to make provision for proper drainage at the railway station. The' report wa* adopted. " The Mayor moved that the Government be asked .to erect a septic tuuk at the station as soon as possible, so as to abate the nuisance existing at the southern end of the platform. The motion was earned. The returning officer reported | on the recent poll taken on the question of Kiting on unimproved values. The Mayor said that he was nut altogether sorry at tlj-e result. The ratepayers could study the winking of the system in other towns. The Mayor was appointed the Council's delegate at the Conference of Local Bodies to select the day for the half-hoviday, and it was resolved to recommend Thursday as the day upon which tire half-holiday should be held.
Auctioneers' licenses were granted to Messrs* J. R. Bland and D. Frtedlander. Mr Shoard's application for a license for his billiard room was granted, subject to certain conditions. The Council then sat as a Domain Board, when the Mayor was appointed chairman of the Board for the year. The application of the Whitecliffs School Committee for the use of the Domaia on the occasion of the school excursion wits granted, ntbj«ct to the payment of one guinea.
