NEW BRIGHTON.

Th<s New Brighton Borough Council met on Monday night. Amongst other correspondence the Treasury Department wrote, stating that a further sum of £1500 would be available for tJie Council under the recent loan before the 31st March. The patronage of the Council was granted to the New Brighton Gaia. It was resolved that the carriers at New Brighton should have the preference in doing carriers' work for , the Council.

The report of the Engineer appointed by the Council to arrange the grades of the streets in Che borough, and! to fix the levels, was read. The report stated that it was not feasible to get anything approaching a rapid fall. No grade (except for a short

length in one street) would be worse than 1 in 792, or one inch to the chain, and this would be sufficient to keep the water moving. If wells and tanks -were provided for flushing purposes, and systematic flushings and sweepings of the channels were adopted, a perfectly satisfactory result would be obtained. At the junction of Hawker street and Sea View road, where the sidechannels became too deep, cu'.verte to river would be necessary; In the . latter case the outfall was slightly below highwater level at spring tides, but such was unavoidable—the same conditions exist at present. The grades, generally closely approximate the existing channels, and there would be little, if any interference, with the present roads and footpaths. The report was adopted. A deputation, headed by Mr Allan Hopkins, waited on the Council -with regard to the delay in formiwg Bowhili riwx3, leading I from Racecourse road to the sea. The Mayor explained that the matter would receive due consideration. The' Finance Committee presented a statement, showing receipts £903 6s lid, outstanding £114 10s, amount expended £1231 2s 4d. As the Council had gone to considerable expenditure in erecting Municipal Chambers, etc., the position was deemed a very eat-iefactory one. ' The Works Committee were authorised to bring up* a report at the next meeting as to the best means of improving BowliM etreet- - • j
