SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

HORNBY. There were present, at a meeting of the Hornby School Committee Messrs Kinross (chairman), Manhire, Leslie, Eaglesome ana Laurenson. Correspondence was read and dealt, with from the Board of Education, relating to swimming and life-saving, also concerning the vacancy on the teaching staff. The Chairman reported that 120 children and about 70 adults had taken part in the school picnic to Heath cote, where a most enjoyable day was spent by all present, and that after paying all accounts there was a balance of 7s left in hand. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to -Mr Anderson'" for donation towards picnic expenses, also to Mr R. M. Morten and Mr Weir for their kindness.

WEST CHIUSTCHURCH. The West Christchurch Committee met on Wednesday eveningi. Present—Mr C. D. Morris (chairman), Messrs S. McMurray, G. Barrell, G. T. Chisnall, G. Watson, and J. H. Jones. It was decided to hold the annual school excursion on the second Friday in. February, and to go to Rangiora if the Domain can be obtained for that day. Accounts amounting to £24 14s Id were passed for payment.

BURWOOD. All the members were present at a meeting of the Burwood Committee. The Chairman reported that after settling all accounts there remained the sum of £6 3s lid on hand. After discussing the cost of a picnic to Amberley, Little River, Purau, and Otarama, it was decided to enquire from the parents whether they would prefer a picnic for tlie children in the country or in a local paddock.

EAST CHRISTCHURCH. On Tuesday night the East Christchurch School Committee met and transacted business. The secretary reported that satisfactory arrangements had been made with Mr Guy Ormandy (one of the teachers) to give instruction in swimming to the pupils during tho present season. The Visiting Conunittee reported that the state of both schools was satisfactory, and that the combination of two class-roome into one was a great improvement. The headmistress of the Phiilipstown School reported that tne average attendance for the past month was—Boys 114.6, girls 95.4; total 209.7; average roll number—Boys 143.8, girls 123.3; total 267.1. The Visiting Committee wa_„ empowered to confer with the headmistress in regard to calling a meeting in Linwood of parents and others willing to assist in getting up an entertainment for the purpose of raising funds to purchase a piano for the Phiilipstown Sohool. It was decided to hold a picnic, and a sub-committee was appointed to make arrangements./ The Visiting Committee for the ensuing month are Messrs Lumeden, Sapsfbrd and Walker.
