FIRE AT ASHBURTON.
Information was received at Ashburton yesterday that the homestead on the Chatmose Estate was totally destroyed by fire on Sunday. The manager, Mr Coward, and Ins family were at church at the time, the only persons on the premises being two servants, one of whom ran and informed the manager of the occurrence. The homestead belongs to the Rhodes' Trustees". Some of the furniture was sav«l, and also a valuable piano. The cause of the fire is unknown. In connection with the fire at Cli&tinofcs homestead, it may be mentioned that among the valuables belonging to Mr Coward thai were destroyed, was an ancient Bible, 150 years old, and which was specially brought out from Home by Mr H. P. Niooll lor Mr Coward about a fortnight ago. The furniture was insured for £150 in tho Farmers' Co-operative, and the house in the Royal Olhoe, but the amount is not known, as the company have no agency at Asliburton.
