General Chaffee, commanded the American troops at the relief of the Pekin Legations, speaking at Brooklyn, said he knew where eighty million dollars' worth of treasure was hidden in the Forbidden City in Pekin. Hβ had planned to seize it, retaining sufficient to pay the indemnity and returning the rest to the Chinese, but President McKtnley forbade him.
