_4I_LEGED IMPROPER TREATMENT OF A CHILD.
At the _»3_«istrafce's Court on Saturday, before Mr R. Beetham, S.M., Thornton Newtome, a middle-aged man, waa charged—(l) that he did on Jan. 7th, at Richmond, with intent to injure Eileen Newsome, a child aged four years, cause to ba taken by such child, a no-riott. thing, to wit, hew; (2) that on January __d the accused did wilfully ill-treat Eileen Newsome ma, manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering to the child; and (3) that he «o__u__iM;ed a Wtoilar offence oh January 7th. ~ The first oharga was la&i wader the Criminal Code Act, and ihe other two under the Children's Protection Aot„ 1890, Sub-Inspector Dwyer asked for a «ma_d for oight days, as the accused had only been __rre«ted on the previous evening. Accused, who was uadefendedj said he had Boraethang to nay. The child's name was entered up wrongly; her proper name was-Jtaleen Healyy Siih-Inspector Dwyer said Accused waa tha child's step-father. . ' The charges were amended as regards the child's name, and the Bench granted the remand. In reply to a question from the Bench, Newsome said be thought he could obtain b*il if He had time.
