Nukuhou Gardening Circle

The Nukuhou Women’s Institute gardening circle held its monthly meeting at Mrs T. Doran’s home. Mrs King presided in the absence bf Mrs Poole. Readings were given by Mrs R. Bell on garden pests, growing dahlias from cuttings or shoots, and growing daphney from cuttings, and the' correct time to pick sweet corn for cooking. A general discussion on gardening followed. A competition, arranged by Mrs Doran, writing the greatest number of names of flowers from the word, rose, in a given time was won by Mrs Englebretson and Mrs King second. Competitions were judged by Mrs J. McLean. Best bloom, Mrs R. Bell 1, Mrs King 2; best vegetable, Mrs King 1, Mr Menzies 2, Mrs B. Burnett 3; best shrub, Mrs Englebretson 1, Mrs King 2; decorated cup and saucer, Mrs King 1, Mrs Bell 2, Mrs Menzies 3.
