First Match For Cieland Memorial Tomorrow

The first cricket match for the Cieland Memorial Shield will be played tomorrow, the teams being Whakatane and Pongakawa Colts. This game inaugurates junior representative cricket in the Bay and gives a grand opportunity to the younger players of the district. Mr W. R. Whiteside, president of the Whakatane Cricket Association, pressed for this innovation at the Bay Association’s annual meeting and the scheme was unanimously approved. Mr Russell Cieland, of the P. and T. Club, donated the shield in honour of his father, the late Mr Cieland, of Awakeri, who played a big part in local and Bay cricket for many years. Pongakawa have a strong team of Colts (players must be 23 years and under) including D. Searle, R. Allen and 16-year-old Peter Smith, who played in the recent Bay trial game at Pongakawa. Whakatane Colts will be led by Des. Carling, of United, the Edgecumbe Club supplying a solid opening bat in C. Griffiths and a hardhitting player in A. Elliott. High School have four reps, in the side, J. Ross, P. Howard, R. Oswald and J. Fitzsimmons. Syd. Shapley heads the P. and T. members of the side, P. Seebeck, B. Whiteside and D. Howat. The match will be from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
