RESPONSIBILITY IS TO PUPILS SAYS PRINCIPAL

In employment matters, his first responsibility was to pupils, said the pi’incipal, Mr I. McHarg, in his report presented at the Whakatane High School break-up last evening. “I fully realise my responsibility to the community and to prospective employers but my first responsibility is to the pupils while they are in my care,” he said. “It is already evident that in common ■with other centres some few employers in Whakatane are willing to try and lever pupils out of school, before they are fit to go or are of much real use to an employer, in some instances even before the child has reached the minimum leaving age. I wish to suggest that even in these cases prospective employers should check up with the careers teacher on the suitability of each individual.

“I have just recently had two experiences of employers taking on apprentices when if they had asked me I could have’ recommended to them other pupils much better qualified. and better suited to the position.

“To prospective employers I say again I shall do my utmost for you, but the position is difficult, and please do not complain if you take some.body whom we are not able to recommend for a particular position.”
