ACHIEVEMENTS OF CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

“The Chamber has, in my opinion, achieved much in the last year, as in past years, and its achievement make it an organisation worthy of the wholehearted support of all its members,” stated the president, Mr B. L. Butler, in his report to be presented to the annual meeting of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday night.

“The membership stands at present at two life members, 10 honorary members and 95 financial members. We hope that the number of financial members will be increased in the near future with the advent of a number of new businesses. “Port Investigations: The Chamber has been particularly interested in all proceedings and has endeavoured to give all the support possible to the local efforts in procuring the port’s establishment at Whakatane.

“Aerodrome:' This very important adjunct to our social and commercial advantages has not been lost sight of and I can assure members that its importance is predominant in our minds. The secretary has probably had more correspondence on this matter than any other in the past year. We do not intend allowing it to remain at an exchange of letters to first one Government Department and than another, but when these departments decide whose responsibility it is to provide the anemometer which is necessary in the first stages of investigations as to the suitability of an area for an aerodrome, we may see some material effort which will assist in deciding the site. “Hotel and Wholesale Licence: The Chamber can confidently state that its efforts in contacting various bodies and organisations in its effort to collate and compile evidence to present to the Licensing Commission at Rotorua did much to favour the case for Whakatane and assisted in the final result. One hotel licence, and one wholesale licence.

“Murupara Visit: During last February 11 members visited Murupara and were entertained by that branch for the day. The whole of the party were impressed by the potential wealth of the forest areas and the scope for the development of Murupara as a township. “College of Retailing: A course of almost three weeks’ duration was held during the year, and some 24 students benefited considerably under the tuition of Miss H. Lang from the New Zealand Council of the Federated Chambers of Commerce.

“This course was wound up with a very happy social function in the Blue Bird lounge where prizes donated by the Chamber were presented to the most successful students.

“Swimming Bath: A sub-commit-tee investigated the possibilities of establishing swimming baths in Whakatane and reported the great necessity for baths but, owing to the huge expense involved and the then approaching considerations for a Community Centre when it would be necessary to appeal to the public for considerable funds, it was decided to leave the proposal in the hope that baths would be incorporated in the domain development. “Health Stamps: Members again assisted with the sale of stamps on the opening day which resulted in a record being established for Whakatane. “Radio Broadcasts: The executive of the Eastern Bay Young Farmers’ Clubs allotted the Chamber an interview with the IYA Mobile Unit while it was in this district. It was my privilege to have 10 minutes “on the air” doing my best to convey to people at other towns and districts the distinct advantages we enjoy in and about Whakatane.

“Farewell Function to Dr Appleby: The Chamber accepted the responsibility of arranging a suitable function, the collecting of funds by subscription and the presentation at an Illuminated Address of an inscribed barometer. This function was a great success and was attended by residents of both town and district.

“Strand Parking—Businessmen’s Cars: Again we must bring this forward as I feel too little consideration is given to country customers. Whakatane is essentially a rural town and is dependent on the people of the county for its prosperity and unless the consideration and service that these good people deserve is given, we are failing in our duty as businessmen of Whakatane. “Whakatane Booklet: These are still selling steadily and arangements have been made to have a printed Christmas card inserted in each copy to make them more attractive as a Christmas gift.”
