COMPLAINTS ANSWERED BY COUNCILLOR

ROAD WORK AT OHOPE

Complaints made by the Ohope Ratepayers’ Association about promises allegedly not kept by the Whakatane County Council were answered yesterday by Mr W. M. Clark, Council member for the Ohope riding.

“The first item mentioned was the reconstruction and sealing of the Beach Road,” said Mr Clark. “Application was made by the County Council to the District Highways Council at the last annual meeting to have £4,389 set aside for this purpose. Owing to the large amount of applications received from Counties the Highways Council reduced this amount to £3,000 and this was the sum recommended to the Highways Board. A letter was received from the Main Highways Board dated August 25, 1950, reducing the sum finally allocated to £2,000. This sum is not sufficient to reform and seal the section of road to the standard contemplated. Reformation only can be carried out this season and it was considered inadvisable to break up the present surface until after the Christmas traffic had eased down. Arrangements are being made to carry out this work early in the New Year so that consolidation can take place to enable sealing to be done next spring.

“The second item concerned the provision of foot bridges at Millar’s and the Captain’s Cabin streams. Reconstruction and sealing work which is being started tomorrow from the hostel to the stream will obviate the necessity for a bridge at this location.

“The building of a bridge at Millar’s stream has been delayed owing to the death of the county bridge builder but this bridge will be an accomplished fact before the holiday season begins.”
