Galatea Pony Club

The Galatea Pony Club held a rally at Matata, competing with different club teams of six horses. Those taking part were Phyl Vegar on Silver, Merle Lee on Robin, Val Wash on Dixie, Ellen Wollar on Tommy, Martin Dunnit on Blue, and Neville Millar on Girl. They acquitted themselves very well against more experienced riders and horses. Merle Lee secured second place in the jumping event for riders 11 to 14 years, and also third place in the flat riding. Val Walsh and Ellen Woller were fourth, equal in the flat racing competition for those under 10 years.

A team, comprising Neville Millar, Nigel Fanning, Val Walsh and Merle Lee gained second place in the message competition. Mr Dunnit took the horses to Matata in his truck; Galatea settlers offered their cars to convey parents, friends, instructors and riders. It was a day to be remembered, and the Pony Club still progresses.
