SURF CLUB NOT TO DEFEND ITS TITLES
Because of the high cost of transport and the uncertainty of obtaining accommodation at Christchurch, the Whakatane Surf Life Saving Club has decided not to send teams to the national championships at Christchurch early in February. This means that the club will not be defending the three titles it won last year. Although it was understood' that accommodation might have been available for competitors there was still some uncertainty and rather than run the risk of ending up in unsatisfactory quarters the club decided not to travel.
However, the biggest problem was that of transport. All shipping and rail connections have been booked out during the period of the championships. The club investigated the possibility of chartering an aeroplane but the cost was considered prohibitive. It has been decided that Whakatane will concentrate on the Bay of Plenty championships to be held this Season at Gisborne and the Auckland Provincial Championships.
