Awakeri Scouts On Weekend Trip
Nine Awakeri boy scouts, with Scoutmaster T. H. Howell and two helpers left Awakeri at 8.15 on Saturday morning on a weekend camping trip to Taupo. The first stop was for morning tea and a sightseeing trip round the Waitapu thermal region. Taupo was reached in the early afternoon and after lunch visits were paid to many points of interest, including the Opepe burial ground. The party camped in Taupo on Saturday night and next day went on to the Mangakino township and Maraetai hydro works. At the Maraetai dam site Scoutmaster Howell and helper, Bruce Parker, accepted a ride in a workers cage and swung in mid air 800 feet above the river. Leaving Maraetai, they went on to Whakama.ru and saw the preliminary work there. The Scouts arrived home on Sunday evening.
