Foundation Member Plays First Ball

Mrs A. Sutherland, who has been a member of the Whakatane Croquet Club since its inception, opened the 1950-51 season on Wednesday by playing the first ball. Visitors from as far as Taneatua and Opotiki were welcomed by Mrs A. Carling, the club president. Several competitions held during the afternoon were popular. Ladder croquet was won by Mrs A. Sutherland, hit the peg won by Mrs W. Fitzsimmons, ring the bell won by Mrs A. Burgess, making the hoop won by Mrs Grace (Taneatua), golf croquet won by Mrs Palmer (Opotiki), progressive croquet won by Mrs Skelton (Opotiki). The cannister of tea went to Mrs A. Carling and the eggs to Mrs Madden.

Mrs E. Hill, president of the Taneatua Club, and Mrs W. J. Madden, president of the Opotiki Club, thanked the Whakatane ladies for the pleasant afternoon.

Croquet is a game popular with young and old as was demonstrated on Wednesday, Mrs Burton, of Opotiki, who is 84 years old competing on an even basis with young women.
