County Rod And Gun Club’s Open Shoot
Conditions were good for the open shoot, conducted by the Whakatane County Rod and Gun Club on their ground at Paroa on Sunday.
In the morning a crosswise wind tended to keep the shooters on their toes but by afternoon conditions were well in hand. Some excellent shooting was the order of the day. The events attracted a wide selection of keen shooters; club members from Rotorua, Morrinsville, Te Puke and Katikati all helped to make the day enjoyable. The big event of the day was the £3O trophy shoot. Twenty-three first class shooters contested this event and after the 15 birds were disposed of, J. McLeod and W. B Hayward had shot the possible while Messrs Hume, Dippie and J L. Hayward scored 14 targets, On the shoot off J. McLeod was first, W. B. Hayward second, Mr Dippie and Mr Hume taking the third and fourth prizes respectively. Mr McLeod’s shooting was, as always, of a very high standard and he featured in number of the other events. Other results were:—
5 Target Eyeopener: R. Sloane J. McLeod, W. Baker, R. Baker, J F. Thomas, J. Pamus and Franklin all shot the possible.
10 Target Sweepstake: Mr Ormond, J. Plamus and W. C. Davies shared the sweep with possibles.
10 Target Sweepstake No. 2: J. McLeod, W. Baker, W. Hume and J. L. Hayward all shot the possible. 10 Target Sweepstake No. 3: W, C. Davies, J. L. Tebbutt, W. Baker, W. Hume, J. L. Hayward, W. B. Hayward all broke the 10 targets. 15 Target Sweepstake: J. McLeod, W. Baker, J. F. Thomas collected the stake with 15 birds.
7 Target Gimcrack: R. Sloane, J McLeod, J. F. !Thomas, W. J. Dippie broke the 71 birds and divided the sweep.
5 Pair Targets, Double Rise: W. J. Dippie shot 9 birds for first money, J. McLeod broke 8 for second prize and W. Kenyon, R. Sloane and Ormond shared third “diwie” with 7 birds each.
In the course of the presentation of the trophies, the club president, Mr J. D. Rivett, welcomed to the shoot Mr Thomas, president of the Rotorua Gun Club, and Mr Ormond, Bay delegate to the N.Z. Gun Club’s Council. Mr Ormond, in the course of his reply, assured shooters that their interests would be well looked after and he would assist all clubs whenever the need arose.
