Probation For Theft Of Posts

Pleading guilty to the theft of two fence posts, valued at 10s, the property of the Lands and Survey Department, H. R. Hitchens was admitted to probation for three months by Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Court yesterday. Senior Sergeant Fuller said Hitchens, a married man, had worked as a carpenter for the Department and had stolen the two posts.

He had no intention of stealing anything of value Hitchens said. The department had chopped up better ones for firewood. “The offence was more foolish than criminal,” said the magistrate.
