Unregistered For lending to another person an unregistered motor cycle, / Hevin Neal Butler was fined £l, plus costs, in the Whakatane Court yesterday. T. Rio, for riding the machine, was similarly fined.
Liquor at Hall For having had liquor near a dance hall Howard Kahura, who pleaded guilty, was fined £3 and ordered to pay costs by Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Court yesterday.
Fingers Injured Three fingers of his right hand were injured when Mervyn Plamus, an employee of Whakatane Board Mills, caught it in a machine during the “graveyard” shift at the weekend. He was admitted to the Whakatane Public Hospital.
Lodge Bowling- - Whakatane M.U.1.0.0.F. indoor bowling team, A. J. Atkinson, Mrs A. Guptill, A. Atkinson and Mrs Stuart, defeated the Whakatane Druids s Lodge team, Mrs L. Henderson, R. Schou, Mrs L. Bell and Miss P. Rivett, in a closely contested match for the Friendly Societies Cup, played in the Parish Hall on Monday.
September Rainfall Whakatane’s rainfall in September was 2.45 inches. The wettest of eight wet days was September 4, when 1.10 inches of rain fell. The September average for the previous 10 years was 4.39 inches. Rainfall for the nine months of this year has been 42.38 inches, compared with a 10-year average of 45.94 inches.
Otakiri Dance A good attendance at the Otakiri Hall enjoyed the music of the 8.8. C. dance band from Opotiki on Saturday. Mr G. O. Lord, as M.C., kept the couples busy with a variety of popular dances. The proceeds will go to the hall funds. The Monte Carlo was won by Mr K. Colebrook and Miss Stones. Competition winners: Weaner pig, Mr D. Bell, Edgecumbe; chocolates, Mr G. O. Lord;.
Won The Cup C. A. Turner and A. W. Talbot, representing the Opotiki 1.0.0JF., won the Foote Cup, for pairs indoor bowling at the Friendly Societies Tournament at Opotiki during the weekend. Another Opotiki team, Messrs A. W. Mortimer and R. G. Williams were the runners-up. The only Whakatane competitors to reach the semi-finals were Miss P. Rivett and Mr J. Chisholm of the Druids Lodge.
Who Is He? Some interest has been aroused as to who is A. J. Atkinson who proposes to stand for the Borough Council. He was described in the Beacon as a retired Borough Foreman. Mr Atkinson is better known as Taffy. Taffy is a retired Quarry Foreman. He was a miner in Wales in his younger days and in that position/became an expert in both underground and above ground blasting and so was well qualified for quarry work in this district.
