Royston’s Players Coming Wednesday

There have been many shows visiting Whakatane from time to time, some good, some indifferent and some very bad, indeed, Therefore, it is not often we find a company of players, all expert in their particular sphere of stage craft appearing in a local theatre. Royston’s show is pure variety entertainment at its best. Royston himself is an outstanding revue performer as well as a top-line speciality act, having starred in at least three leading revue companies visiting the Dominion since the conclusion of the war. Royston’s Variety Show will be at the Grand Theatre on Wednesday. ' His group of variety players include Australia's ace comedian visiting New Zealand for the first time, whose droll comedy cannot fail to be appreciated by local audiences. Belle Reddie is an expert in tap dancing in the modern manner. Vince Burke is no stranger to New Zealand, having held the baton for orchestras of principal revue companies throughout Australia and New Zealand. His amazing technique at the piano is the envy of all who see and hear him play. Billy French is an unusual vocalist with an unusual voice which cannot fail to please listeners. Frogman is truly a boneless wonder. He is truly a “Human Frog.” Juanita demonstrates the beautiful and col-' ourful dance with charm and poise. Dorothy Caddy is a young lady with an exceptional voice of clarity and tone. Marvello, the boy magician more than does justice with his dexterity and skill in an act which leaves you wondering. Peter Crago’s nimble feet more than do him credit for one so young in years. The four tune-aires, who come direct after a lengthy engagement with the Australian Broadcasting Commission, form a quartet of pleasing harmony. The Mello Sisters, with their piano acordians and their sweet vocal efforts should please all. Finally, those too characters—■ Skeeter and Nellie —Royston’s almost human talking dolls, complete a programme of very satisfying fare indeed. Royston’s Variety Players will be showing for one night only with a special “afterschool” matinee for the children. This special matinee. features Royston’s Punch and Judy Show with 20 puppets. All the old favourites together with many new and wonderful characters. This is the same show which Royston presented at Vice-Regal functions in Australia. Box plans are open at Armstrong’s Book Shop.
